The Battlefields of Ypres & The Somme
There is no more a moving and humbling experience than a tour to the battlefield sites of the First World War, with the benefit of one of our very experienced tour guides to bring the events of 1914-18 to life. In the Ypres area, your tour follows the events of 1917 from the beginning of the Messines offensive in June to the end of the Passchendaele offensive in November. On The Somme, your tour follows the events of 1 July 1916 in considerable detail.
Day 1 - Depart home for morning Channel crossing arriving in France early afternoon. Visit to Notre Dame de Lorette French Cemetery and preserved trenches at Vimy Ridge en route to your hotel. Dinner in the hotel. Following dinner introductory presentation on one of the following themes: The Ypres Salient in general, The events of 1917 in the Salient.
Day 2 - Morning visit to ‘In Flanders Fields’ Exhibition in Ypres. Tour of Ypres on foot to include the Menin Gate and the British Memorial to the Missing. Visit to Lille Gate British Cemetery and St George Anglican Church. Afternoon visits to Croonaert Wood, and Spanbroekmolen Crater. Continue on to Hill 60, then Sanctuary Wood Museum. Final visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery at Passchendaele and the German Cemetery at Langemark. Dinner in Ypres before attending the moving Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate at 20:00 hrs.
Day 3 - Transfer to the Somme area. En route presentation on the first day of the Somme. Brief stop in Albert, before visiting the impressive Lochnagar Crater at La Boisselle, continue to Delville Wood. In the afternoon, pass by High Wood and the Tank Corps Memorial at Pozieres on the way to Thiepval to see the Somme’s Memorial to over 73,000 missing. Continue via Connaught Cemetery and Ulster Tower to Newfoundland Park, an extensive section of preserved trenches and to the Sunken Lane at Beaumont Hamel. Possible visit to Serre and the Accrington Pals’ Memorial. Return to hotel for dinner.
Day 4 - Free for shopping and sightseeing. Please note that the guide is not usually available on the last day. Opportunity to visit historic Bruges or Toc H at Poperinge or leave early to spend time at the hypermarket. Return to port for a short sea or Eurotunnel crossing, arriving home mid to late evening.

The group will be collected from their chosen pick-up point by an executive air-conditioned coach, which will remain with them throughout the tour. Channel crossings are with P & O Stena Line or Eurotunnel. All accommodation is subject to availability. For peak season dates we strongly recommend that you book early.
